Sunlit Lawn - Central Park

On A Clear Day

New York's Central Park is a busy place. This lawn is typically full of people, hundreds of people who come here to read, sunbathe, toss footballs and Frisbees, or just to enjoy some fresh air while spending time with friends.

On this day, too, the people where there. They were behind me, crammed onto smaller patches of grass. The park was not nearly as peaceful as it seems in the photo.

Nevertheless, and to my great delight, this popular meadow was closed. I'm not sure why; I didn't take time to read the sign. I saw the opportunity to take a very special photo of a park without people, and I got to work on that.

The weather was perfectly clear. The grass was an amazing rich green for late in the season. And that streak of sunlight channeling through the buildings, that was just pure magic.

This is my favorite photo of the year.

Tribute Lights - New York City (2019)

New Perspectives on a Solemn Anniversary

I missed the the 9/11 tribute lights this year. I had heard that they were planning to cancel the them due to the pandemic. I saw on the news that they actually were on, so either they changed their plans at the last-minute, or my information was wrong. Hopefully, things will be a bit more normal by next September. This was only the second time that I have missed the anniversary.

Thankfully, I was able to photograph the lights last year, when I captured some of my favorite images, including this one that I shot from one of the piers on the Hudson River.

9/11 Tribute Lights - New York City (2019)

This was one of my first attempts to adapt my Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens to a Sony mirrorless camera body. I sold most of my Canon gear years ago, but I couldn't bring myself to part with this lens, because I loved it so much.

This lens was my favorite for landscapes and architecture during my Canon years. Happily, its optical performance is outstanding, and it adapts well to sensors with resolution that I could not have imagined when I purchased it ten years ago.

When you're lucky enough to discover a classic, hold onto it.

South Street Seaport At Night

The New Pier 17

South Street Seaport sustained extensive damage in the autumn of 2012 when Superstorm Sandy hit New York City. Many buildings had to be repaired. The beloved waterside structure on Pier 17 was damaged so badly that it had to be torn down and replaced.

This is the new Pier 17 structure. It looks rather bland during the day, unfortunately, but they light it up in the evening. It doesn't have the charm of the old Pier 17, one of New York's most recognizable landmarks. But perhaps the new structure will be better able to withstand the storms of the future.

Green Kitchen Diner - New York

Color Of Night Series

a photo of a new york diner at night by daniel south

I began my study of photography by purchasing some books from the Borders bookstore near my home. Lee Frost's "The Complete Guide To Night And Low Light Photography" was particularly inspiring. I used to sit and read it for hours on end, carefully looking at each photo and reading how it was captured.

Mr. Frost's beautiful work inspired me to experiment with taking pictures in the dark. I have always been fascinated by the color, texture, and drama of city lights at night. I love to capture shots like this.

New York Diner On Christmas Day

Merry Christmas 2018!

a photo of a new york city diner decorated for christmas
3-Star Diner On Christmas Day

Obstructions are everywhere. Sometimes, we can work around them, but in many cases we have to include them in a way that doesn't detract from the subject.

I couldn't move the light poles, so I created a frame by placing them at about the same distance from either side of the photo. I like the not-so-subtle effect of the One Way signs pointing toward the diner, as if to say, "Look this way!"

The garbage cans are small in comparison to the poles, so their impact is minimal. It's New York. No one should be surprised that we have garbage here. It adds authenticity. ;-)

I did clone out an empty beverage cup that was rolling around in the street, and I used layers to erase a worker in the diner whose face was prominent in the original photo (luckily, I made multiple exposures). But the light poles, the garbage cans, the fire hydrant, and the delivery bike are all part of the composition, for better or for worse. There's a lot going on in the city. Sometimes, you have to work with what's in front of you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
