New York Diner On Christmas Day
Merry Christmas 2018!
Obstructions are everywhere. Sometimes, we can work around them, but in many cases we have to include them in a way that doesn't detract from the subject.
I couldn't move the light poles, so I created a frame by placing them at about the same distance from either side of the photo. I like the not-so-subtle effect of the One Way signs pointing toward the diner, as if to say, "Look this way!"
The garbage cans are small in comparison to the poles, so their impact is minimal. It's New York. No one should be surprised that we have garbage here. It adds authenticity. ;-)
I did clone out an empty beverage cup that was rolling around in the street, and I used layers to erase a worker in the diner whose face was prominent in the original photo (luckily, I made multiple exposures). But the light poles, the garbage cans, the fire hydrant, and the delivery bike are all part of the composition, for better or for worse. There's a lot going on in the city. Sometimes, you have to work with what's in front of you.

Giacometti At The Guggenheim
Impressionistic Inspirations In Metal
For decades, I have been a fan of the works of Twentieth-Century Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). I find his sculptures to be particularly inspiring. With their exaggerated proportions and rough finish, Giacometti's works offer a wildly impressionistic view of the human form and other familiar shapes and items.
The Guggenheim Museum in New York is hosting an impressive collection of Giacometti's sculptures and drawings through 12 September 2018. If you are planning to be in the New York area over the next couple of months, put the Giacometti exhibition at the top of your must-see list.

Follow Your Heart
The Importance Of Intuition In Art and Life
Photography is a highly intuitive pursuit. As we interact with out surroundings, we find ourselves drawn to certain subjects and settings, not because some rule or calculation sends us in that direction, but because of how we feel when we see them.
Once we select a setting and a subject, we continue to interact with them as we fine tune the images that we seek to create.
All of these choices are highly personal, driven by an intuitive, instinctive capacity that we never fully comprehend. When our choices are made honestly, a true expression of what we feel within, they form the basis of each individual's style.

When I'm working with my camera, I frequently come to decision points where there is no clear advantage to going in one direction or another. Should I follow this road north or south? Should I set up lights or work with the light that is available? Should I try a different lens? Should I ask my subject to do something that's outside of their comfort zone?
In these moments, I find that it's better not to think but to feel. At a crossroad, I'll make an instantaneous decision - right or left? I leave it up to my body. Whichever direction it decides to go is the right one. I'll find something there to photograph, and the results will surprise me.
Your heart knows where it wants to do. Your feet know how to take you there. Trust your instincts and your intuition. Relax, take your time, and embrace the magic of chance.
