Fast Times At The Guggenheim

Motion Pictures

I enjoy capturing motion with a still camera, rendering moving objects as smears of color, as though they were created by sweeping a paint brush across a canvas.

The effect stands out against a sharp, well-focused background, especially when the background contains a recognizable landmark.

Nights In The Park

Finding Beauty In Darkness

My low-light photography journey began long ago. One of the first books I bought when I was learning to use a camera specialized in the challenges of capturing images in dimly lit conditions.

Bethesda Terrace and Reflections - Central Park, New York City

That was back in the film days, and the process was quite different. We didn't have the ability to confirm a proper exposure at the time of capture. HDR, Image Stabilization, and Night Mode didn't exist. High ISO film looked horrible, and the film that we used to capture most images required specially calculated adjustments to exposure time when the exposures lasted longer than a few seconds. Focusing effectively in the dark was extraordinarily challenging.

I didn't do terribly well at first, and for some years, I all but gave up the idea of taking photos at night. The only photos I took at night were star trails which, surprisingly, were easier to capture on film than with digital sensors.

Once I made a firm switch to digital imaging, I gave night photography another try. One year, I went around the city photographing exterior Christmas decorations in the Winter darkness. It was a great exercise. I learned a lot in a few months, and I haven't looked back. I'm always looking for opportunities to capture the beauty of the night.

Fort Hancock At Sandy Hook

Crumbling Treasures Of The Jersey Shore

I don't get to the Jersey Shore as often as I used to, but I'm always happy to return to some of my favorite places.

I started photographing Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook over a decade ago when I was still shooting film. It's a treat to go back with my digital cameras and capture images of familiar structures using the latest technology.

Sadly, the fort is in bad shape these days. Many of the buildings have been condemned and left to crumble slowly without any upkeep. This is such a beautiful place, and it wouldn't cost much to keep these buildings standing, even if they're not habitable.

If you're a history buff or a photographer who likes to capture images of old buildings, I would urge you to visit Sandy Hook and Fort Hancock at your earliest convenience.

Bethesda Terrace at Night (2020)

Moving Forward

2020 has been a challenging year. Everyone knows someone who has lost someone, and many of us have lost people who were very dear to us.

We can't change what's happened. We'll never recover what's been lost. All we can do is stay strong and move forward with positive intentions and a new appreciation for what's truly important.

Night View Of The Bow Bridge - Central Park (2020)

Romantic Reflections

a photo of the bow bridge in central park at night

The elegant curves of Central Park's Bow Bridge have been featured in movies and television shows.

Across the water are some of New York's most exclusive residential properties. The building with the tall towers is The Eldorado (with the tall towers). The Dakota, where John Lennon lived, is just beyond the left edge of the frame.
