Bethesda Terrace at Night (2020)

Moving Forward

2020 has been a challenging year. Everyone knows someone who has lost someone, and many of us have lost people who were very dear to us.

We can't change what's happened. We'll never recover what's been lost. All we can do is stay strong and move forward with positive intentions and a new appreciation for what's truly important.

Night View Of The Bow Bridge - Central Park (2020)

Romantic Reflections

a photo of the bow bridge in central park at night

The elegant curves of Central Park's Bow Bridge have been featured in movies and television shows.

Across the water are some of New York's most exclusive residential properties. The building with the tall towers is The Eldorado (with the tall towers). The Dakota, where John Lennon lived, is just beyond the left edge of the frame.

Sunlit Lawn - Central Park

On A Clear Day

New York's Central Park is a busy place. This lawn is typically full of people, hundreds of people who come here to read, sunbathe, toss footballs and Frisbees, or just to enjoy some fresh air while spending time with friends.

On this day, too, the people where there. They were behind me, crammed onto smaller patches of grass. The park was not nearly as peaceful as it seems in the photo.

Nevertheless, and to my great delight, this popular meadow was closed. I'm not sure why; I didn't take time to read the sign. I saw the opportunity to take a very special photo of a park without people, and I got to work on that.

The weather was perfectly clear. The grass was an amazing rich green for late in the season. And that streak of sunlight channeling through the buildings, that was just pure magic.

This is my favorite photo of the year.

Tribute Lights - New York City (2019)

New Perspectives on a Solemn Anniversary

I missed the the 9/11 tribute lights this year. I had heard that they were planning to cancel the them due to the pandemic. I saw on the news that they actually were on, so either they changed their plans at the last-minute, or my information was wrong. Hopefully, things will be a bit more normal by next September. This was only the second time that I have missed the anniversary.

Thankfully, I was able to photograph the lights last year, when I captured some of my favorite images, including this one that I shot from one of the piers on the Hudson River.

This was one of my first attempts to adapt my Canon 24mm tilt-shift lens to a Sony mirrorless camera body. I sold most of my Canon gear years ago, but I couldn't bring myself to part with this lens, because I loved it so much.

This lens was my favorite for landscapes and architecture during my Canon years. Happily, its optical performance is outstanding, and it adapts well to sensors with resolution that I could not have imagined when I purchased it ten years ago.

When you're lucky enough to discover a classic, hold onto it.
