Matthias Church - Budapest

Immaculate View

Budapest is one of the most visually stunning cities in the world. Matthias Church at the Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side of the Danube River is one of the city's most beautiful features.

Matthias Church - Budapest

Matthias Church has a very tall tower. Standing across the street, I could not fit it all into my wide-angle lens without a lot of perspective distortion, which looked horrible. I created this image by shooting six images moving the camera from street level upward to the top of the tower, and stitching those images together with software. I hope you like it!

Tower Bridge - London

Triumph of the Human Spirit

London. Paris. New York.

These great cities have experienced more than their share of troubles, both in recent years and throughout history. And yet, each one stands, boldly and proudly, a testament to the triumphs of the human spirit.

You'll find the world's best museums here. The best libraries. The best examples of art and architecture. The best music The best ideas. And the epitome of commerce and business.

Humanity will always face problems. Life has never been easy, and some of our most persistent challenges have been self-inflicted. But the sum total of the human experience is wildly positive. If you need a reminder, take a walk along the Thames. Or the Seine. Or Fifth Avenue. Let the historic achievements of mankind inspire you to reach for your own soaring accomplishments.

Vernazza Under Cloudy Skies

Memories of the Cinque Terre

It's been nearly five years since I visited the Cinque Terre for three stormy days in November. Hopefully, I'll get to enjoy less dramatic weather on my next trip. :-)

Love

Composing An Emotion

I came across this lovely sculpture while walking through the town of Evora in Portugal. I believe that it was located in a small park near a church, but I would be hard pressed to find it again.

I took this photo several years ago when digital photography was in its infancy and film offered the best resolution. This particular film (I believe that it was Velvia 100) rendered the colors of the darkening sky wonderfully.

Love - Evora, Portugal

The figures in the sculpture are abstract. Are we looking at a man and a woman? A parent and a child? We're not certain. They could be two playful bears or penguins for all we know.

What's clear is the quality of the interaction between the two figures. It's an intimate interaction. It's caring, comfortable, tender. To me, the sculpture represents love, love in its purest form, two beings adoring each other in a perfect moment of oneness.

The photograph required some creative decision making. The first decision was to backlight the figures and present them as silhouettes against the colorful sunset. The stones are actually white. - This is really quite an impressive piece of art, and I would encourage you to visit it if you can (and if it's still there)!

The second decision involved the placement of the figures. I decided to place the larger figure at the edge of the frame. It looks as though the smaller figure is approaching the larger figure willingly and joyfully. If I had put the smaller figure against the left edge of the photo, it would have looked as though the larger one was dominating.

I could have put everything smack dab in the middle, but pushing one of the figures toward the edge added more drama, in my opinion. He's up against the wall, and she's moving toward him lovingly.

It took a lot of photos back in my films years. This is one of my favorites.

The Power Of Nature - Gulf Of Corinth

Along The Road

We all face challenges and disappointments in life.

Never underestimate the power of nature to soothe the soul. Sometimes, all you have to do is pull over to the side of the road, and there it will be waiting for you.

Amsterdam After Dark

Blue Hour On A Tranquil Canal

Amsterdam is a delightful city, fun, appealing to the eyes, easy navigate on foot (and probably by boat - I just haven't had the pleasure).

I captured this evening shot during one of my walks. I didn't have a destination or a schedule in mind. I just wandered through the center of the city to see what there was to see.

Blue Gate - Cinque Terre

Entrance To A Garden in Corniglia

The Cinque Terre ('Five Lands') were once isolated fishing villages situated along a rocky coastline in Northern Italy. Thanks to heavy promotion by the travel industry along with a convenient new rail line, the area now attracts a lot of tourists.

The area is still charming. There aren't many hotels here, mostly just rooms for short-term rental, and everything closes early. Just don't expect an undiscovered wilderness.

There are surprises around every corner in the Cinque Terre. If you're willing to take your time and stroll a bit, and you'll discover all sorts of lovely secrets here.

Metéora

Mountaintop Monasteries

Imagine a monastery perched atop a pillar of rock several hundred feet above the valleys below. If you want to visit the monastery, you'll need to be prepared to climb a long series of winding stone staircases.

Now imagine six such monasteries clustered together in a small area, and you'll have an idea what awaits intrepid tourists at Metéora.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Metéora in Northern Greece has a rugged terrain featuring enormous rock outcroppings towering up to 1,800 feet above the surrounding plane.

Hermetic monks began to settle in this area in the late Middle Ages. The challenging terrain discouraged visitors and marauders from disturbing their encampments.

Eventually, the monks began to build monasteries on the peaks of the rock spires. More than twenty monasteries were constructed, but only six remain in existence today.

Metéora is a fascinating destination for any traveler who can manage the stair climbing that's required.

Red and White Chapel - Mykonos

A View from the Countryside

The Greek island of Mykonos has hundreds of chapels spread along its shores, hills, and roadways. Many chapels were built by sailors in hopes of safe passage on rough seas.

I had time to photograph only a handful of these lovely chapels, many of which are reserved for use only one day a year. This rustic beauty was one of my favorites.

Red and White Chapel - Mykonos, Greece

The chapel is located on a small, winding road in the countryside, far from the crowded shops and restaurants of Mykonos Town. The altitude here afforded a clear view of the sea. I liked the contrast of the blue of the sky and water against the red roof and dome.
